The two villages are approx. 2.5 miles apart in the heart of the hop fields and fruit–growing region of Kent, just south of the A20 and M20 (between junctions 4 and 5) and off the A228 heading N to Chatham and Rochester and SW (via the A26) to Tonbridge and Tunbridge Wells. A good bus service also connects them to Maidstone, only 5 miles away. West Malling is the larger of the two developments – a historic market town with a mixture of architectural styles from modern, Georgian, Tudor, medieval and even Norman. St Leonards tower was built around 1080 by the Bishop of Rochester and is a fine early example of a Norman tower keep.

Also famous for its reputation as the site of the first recorded cricket match in Kent, West Malling maintains its rural roots and hosts a regular farmers' market once a month on Sunday mornings. East Malling has much more of a village feel about it, with its church dedicated to St James the Great. As well good road connections, both East Malling and West Malling have their own railway stations, with services to Maidstone, Ashford International & London and another nearby at New Hythe runs to Paddock Wood and the Medway towns.

The estimated population of Malling is around 13,000 and its proximity to the M26 leading to the M25 London Orbital makes it a popular commuter location. Other key villages nearby include Kings Hill, Leybourne, Larkfield and Ditton.
