Deal and Walmer: Kingsdown, Ringwould, Sholden, Ripple, Eastry. |
|
|
Situated on the east coast of Kent, Deal is a small fishing community between Dover and Ramsgate, only 25 miles across the English Channel from France, which can been seen on a clear day. Once the busiest port in England, today it enjoys a quieter reputation as a peaceful seaside resort, with quaint streets and houses and the Tudor Castle to serve as a reminder of its fascinating maritime history. The towns motto is Befriend the Stranger and everything is within easy reach on foot, making it ideal for old and young generations alike.
Deal is a wonderful place to bring up young families, with a good seletion of three and four bedroom homes at extremley competitive prices. It is also agreat place to retire, with plenty of two bedroom bungalows in and around the town.
It boasts the last fully–intact leisure pier in the country, a good range of restaurants from Indian and Chinese to fish & chips or sandwiches on the seafront, several museums and a market every Saturday. Served by the A258 leading north to Sandwich and south to Dover just 8 miles away (and access to the A2), with the B2056 crossing the town itself. Nearby villages include Kingsdown, Sholden and Walmer – the latter reportedly being Julius Caesars first landing place in Britain in 55BC.
Both Deal and Walmer have their own train stations (as well as castles!) but otherwise are very closely associated and share the same main shopping facilities. Walmer also boasts its own castle, the second in a series of three on this part of the Kent coast which, together with Sandown (now lost to coastal erosion) were all built under the instruction of King Henry VIII. |
