A small and pretty town on the Kent/ Surrey border, Edenbridge is nestled deep in the Kent countryside and is a delightful collection of historical buildings in a rural setting. Equidistant between the A21 and A22 to the south of the M25 in the Sevenoaks district of the county, it gives its name to the River Eden, a tributary of the River Medway, which passes through the town and over which the original bridge was built by the Romans in around 100AD.
It was a traditional crossing point for wood and iron to be taken from nearby Ashdown Forest on its way to London. In the 1800s with the crossing of two major railways (east west and north south) the town was a popular loading point for farm produce and saw the start of the first commuters to the city. There are still two stations: Edenbridge (for trains to London and Tonbridge) and Edenbridge Town serving Uckfield where the line now terminates. The 13th century church has a fine set of stained glass windows, and it is thought the original stone building may have been built soon after the Norman invasion in 1066.
A good range of shops serve not only the town folk but also neighbouring villages like Hever, Marsh Green, Four Elms and Chiddingstone. There are several good restaurants both in the high street and in the surrounding area, and no shortage of friendly local pubs and inns for good food and local ales.In a recent survey in the national press, Edenbridge featured in the top ten UK property hotspots!
There is a great selection of affordable two and three bedroomed family homes in and around the Edenbridge area, making this a excellent town in which to live and bring up a young family. |
